Final Reflection

So I guess rainy days equals the perfect time to do my Final ECMP 355 Reflection. Ever since I have discovered Prezi I have been obsessed with it so of course I did my final reflection via Prezi. I was very happy to see that you can add audio to a prezi presentations. I had lots of fun doing this final reflection and thinking about all the things I learned. It was hard to keep it under 5 minutes. I see now how someone can easily make it a long reflection because we learn so much! I managed to take the things I learned that were most important to me and create my Final ECMP 355 Reflection answering the question what did I learn?

Thanks everyone for making this class a great and beneficial one!

Reflection on Live Session

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Live Session on Thursday evening but I did watch it today and then thought about all the awesome things the presenters said. It was great to hear from real classroom teachers and see some of the tools they use in their classroom. I appreciate every speaker taking time to talk to us and share their ideas. It was also nice to hear from a range of teachers. One speaker that stuck out to me was Heather Durnin. She talked about tools that I would like to use in my classroom, such as Word Press, Skype and Google Apps. It is awesome to hear that the school gets students signed onto Google Apps. I really really want to try using Google Docs in my classroom. It is a fun and easy way to work collaboratively. Through this class I have learned that it is very beneficial to hear from different people, therefore, I think Skype is a great tool to use in the classroom. With Skype students have the opportunity to hear from and connect with people all over the globe. I wish I would have had the chance to hear more from all kinds of people in School and University. I now enjoy blogging and I think blogging is a great way to share ideas with others. It is a great way to enhance students learning and also get them to connect with others and learn from them. I like that she mentioned TodaysMeet. These chat boxes, if used properly are great. As she mentioned some students are shy and have trouble voicing their opinions. I was that student, but I would have easily made up a name and shared my ideas anonymously. A Radio Station is an amazing idea. I have never heard of a school having a radio station, I have only seen it on TV. The tools that Heather mentioned allow students to voice their opinions in different ways and they allow students to connect and share ideas, and from this class I have learned connecting with people is a great way to learn new things. I was surprised to hear her say that technology is used more in Elementary School than in High School.  I would think students are more technology aware in High School. I hope that changes soon. It is important to keep technology going through the transition between Elementary School to High School. Heather shared with us many ideas she has and projects her students do, which is awesome because that is exactly what I wanted to hear, ideas that have been put into practice. This live session has made me even more excited to start teaching with technology!

Thanks to all the presenters for the great ideas and the inspiration! Your time is appreciated!

Internship!

I am going to go meet my co op teacher tomorrow. I am very excited to hear what she has to say. She seems super nice and I am beyond excited. I am mostly excited that I have a co op teacher who speaks French and also teachers immersion. In my pre-internship I had to co teach a Core French class and the students did not speak any French. I was afraid that would be the case again. But its not!! Thank goodness because I was worried I was going to lose my French! I also found out that I might end up teaching all French! Which would be awesome. It is kind of scary though because I am not super confident in my French and I know the students in immersion will be good. So it is nerve wrecking but I know I will learn so much!

I hope the rest of you future interns are excited!

Just as this class is coming to an end my life is beginning to be more busy. I have really enjoyed this class it has been amazing and I am excited to get into my internship and but some of the things I have learned into practice.

Well I guess now it is time to get thinking about my final reflection! there is so much I have learned!

Concerned For The Future of Education!

I was talking to my boyfriend’s cousin, who lives in Ontario, on the weekend and she told me she heard on the news that the hiring process of teachers has changed recently in Ontario, teachers are now being hired based on seniority. I was very interested and I started asking questions, my boyfriend’s cousin couldn’t answer them as she didn’t want to give me false information, so I decided to look it up. I am concerned with what I found. It’s true the hiring process has changed and in my opinion it has changed for the worse. I read the article, Ontario vs. Teachers: The Issue of Seniority which explains this new policy. Basically, now beginner teachers have to first apply to be on the list of substitutes, then they have to wait and wait and wait to get a call because substitutes are hired based on seniority, therefore beginner teachers are on the bottom. Then to make things worse, permanent teachers are hired off of this list, based on seniority. The teachers with the most experience get calls for interviews WAY before beginner teachers. Ontario says this policy makes the hiring process more “fair.”  I disagree. Who’s to say that the best teachers are always the ones with the most experience? Well with this policy they will never know, they won’t know if the beginner teachers are better for the job because they won’t have the chance to prove themselves.

Education is always changing, it is kind of like a trend and teachers need to keep up or they will become outdated. The big thing now is 21st century learning and technology. Many teachers with lots of experience don’t even know what 21st century learning is nor do they understand how technology can benefit the students. Sometimes the best teachers are the ones coming out of University. Fair would be giving them a chance against the teachers with experience, if the teacher with more experience is better than fine. However, if the beginner teacher is best for the job, why shouldn’t they get the job? What about the students? Students deserve the best teachers possible and hiring teachers based on seniority will not always provide the best teachers. I think every teacher regardless their experience level should have a fair opportunity to new jobs. This new policy concerns me and I hope that in the future it doesn’t catch on and move towards Saskatchewan. The last thing education students need, after spending 4 years of time and  money, is difficulty finding a job. Beginner teachers are the most excited to get out there, teach and finally have their own class, with this policy they will be easily discouraged.

I also found more articles on this subject, all of which are informative but concerning.

I need some ideas? Please!

I am starting my summer job next week. I got a job working with the Town of Rosthern (small town outside of Saskatoon). I will be running the summer day camp for July and August. I am in charge of planning everything all the activities etc. I start June 17th and I get paid for 2 weeks to plan everything. It is very open ended and I can do anything I want. There are two groups, the first is kids aged 5 to 9 and the second is kids aged 9 to 12. I have to find enough activities to plan for 2 month and I do not want to do too much repetition. Since I am in secondary education I have not had much experience planning things for younger kids. So I was wondering if any of you could offer some ideas of great activities you have tried or you think would be fun. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! I am really excited to start my summer job and I think it is going to be a lot of fun!

Technology Tools Every Teacher Should Know About

I came across the article: 50 Education Technology Tools Every Teacher Should Know About on the Edudemic website. This article includes a list of 50 technology tools that are useful to teachers. This article is useful because it lists all these tools right in one place. Then when I want to try a new technology tool I can simply go to this article and find a new tool to try. Everything is one place, which is very convenient. Many of the tools listed were introduced to us by the presenters of our live sessions. I also like that the site separates the different tools into sections: Social Learning, Learning, Lesson Planning and Tools and Useful Tools. Personally I feel it is overwhelming how many tools are out there, therefore, it is helpful that the article breaks them into sections. I found this article useful and I will definitely be bookmarking it and referencing it when I am using technology in the classroom.

Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation

As of April I finished my last ECS Class, I don’t think it sunk in until now. When I go back to the university in January I only have to take 3 more classes, none of which are education classes. So I am done all my ECS classes, but I still have so many questions. I found many of my ECS classes useful but it was mostly theory. I wanted to know more about when I first start teaching. How do I apply for teaching jobs? What about contracts? What are the different types of contracts? How do I go about starting to substitute next May and June? What about benefits of teaching? Salary? These are the types of things I wish I learned about in University. Fortunately I had the opportunity to meet with a STF representative during my pre-internship and I asked him many questions and I learned more about the Teaching profession. Then I went on the STF website and found even more information. So if you are in the same boat as me and you crave more information the STF websiteis very useful.

What makes you Itch: Inspirational video

I stumbled across this video: What Makes You Itch. This video talks about how people revolve their life around doing what makes you money. What if money were no object, what would you do? what would make you happy? It is interesting to think about this, everyone does jobs they do not enjoy because they need to make money, because they need money to survive. It is better to be unhappy and have money? or is it better to do what you love? I found this video very interesting and inspirational. I think we should always encourage our students to do things that make them happy and to not worry about money. However, this is hard to do when everyone needs money to survive.

What do you think of this video?

Tech Task #7 – Mobiles for Learning

I found Liz Kolb’s presentation very informative and helpful. Before I only knew of a few tools that use mobile learning and now I can go on her blog and try out all the different tools available to me and my students. Almost every single student in High School will have a cell phone, so why not use them as an educational tool. The one tool I really like and can’t wait to try is ClassPager. This tool can be used a few different ways.

1. Students are forgetful and busy and sometimes they will simply just forget to do things, everyone does. With this tool I can send a mass text to my students reminding them that they have homework due the next day. This way students are reminding when they are at home and then they can do it. Of course not every student is going to need reminding and of course some students still won’t do the homework. But for those that just need a little reminder it is perfect. If students need to bring something to class the next day the teacher can text them and remind them.

2. If students are doing homework and they get stuck they can text the ClassPager and the teacher can response. A little while ago I wrote a post about my view on homework and I said one disadvantage of homework is that students couldn’t get help at home from the student. With this tool that is possible. Or if the student is really struggling they can text the teacher and ask them if they can get help the next day before school starts, then the teacher knows the student is coming and will need help.

3. Learning is continuous, it doesn’t end when school is over. With this tool the teacher can send students class updates outside of school. One example on the ClassPager website was: The teacher could send a text telling students about a documentary that will be and ask them a question about the documentary for bonus marks they text back the response. I remember several times where I went to school and my teacher said “oh I watched a great documentary last night did any of you?” Of course none of us did because we didn’t know about it.

4. During the summer students tend to forget what they learned. Teachers can text students throughout the summer every once in a while to ensure students do not forget what they learned. As Liz said in her presentation it saves time in September because the teacher may not have to review what the student learned in May and June.

5. With this tool teachers can communicate with parents. Communication is very important and every time the teacher send the students a text the parents can receive it as well. This way the parents are updated on what the students are doing. Parents always want to know what is going on. The teacher can also send a text that is just for the parents, reminding them of parent-teacher interviews or forms that need to be returned etc.

I will definitely try to use this tool when I am teaching. I am not sure if I will have the opportunity in my internship but I definitely will once I start teaching. With the students in French class it is important that they continue using their French in order not to lose it. Therefore I would send French texts during the summer and outside of class and students can practice texting back in French. I would use this tool to send reminders to my students, about homework, supplies they must bring, class updates. I would always text back if the students need help with homework. I would feel better sending students with homework if they know I will be available for help. I would definitely use this tool to communicate with parents. Parents are busy and like everyone else they may need reminders too. Parents can also send me questions if they need to. Learning is continuous, therefore, the teacher should be available whenever needed.  After listening to Liz’s presentation I definitely feel better about using mobile learning in the classroom.

The Classroom Experiment

I am not sure if any of you have watch the video The Classroom Experiment. I recently watched it for the second time, it is a great video and I recommend it to everyone. Both Part One and Part Two are available on youtube. This is a 2 hour long documentary, but it is definitely worth watching it. Instead of watching a movie take time to watch this documentary. Professor Dylan William spends one term with a class and tries different strategies to improve academic achievement. We have been talking about 21st century learning in this class and I think this video fits nicely into this topic. Professor Dylan William shares many great strategies that have be proven to improve students achievement.

I found this video very informative and helpful, I would definitely like to try some of the strategies shown in the video in my own classroom.  The video shows about 5 different techniques that professor Dylan William decides to try to use in the classroom and how the students react.  I agree with most of the strategies that were portrayed in the video and I am excited to try them out with my students.

In the video professor Dylan said: “Hands-up is damaging.” I found this statement interesting I never realized how damaging hands-up can be.  It is such an old tradition that most teachers don’t even think twice about, they just do it because that is how it has always been done. Instead William suggests using popsicle sticks with students names on them instead of using Hands-Up. I think the popsicle sticks are a great way to add variety to the class and give all students an opportunity to answer questions.  My Core French Education professor has mentioned this strategy many times and I think it can be very effective in a second language classroom because the majority of students will be too shy to answer a question or speak in their second language.  The downside to this strategy is that the students who are used to answering all the time start to feel left out, therefore it would work best if the strategy was implemented right from day one.

The whiteboard strategy is great, students can write their responses on whiteboards and then show them to the teacher. With this strategy the whole class has the chance to answer. I have seen this strategy used in the 2 schools I worked at in France and it worked great.  The students loved when they got to take out their whiteboards and everyone always participated.  It is something different and it promotes total participation, which is a positive thing in the classroom.

I love the secret student strategy. Each day the teacher decides to watch a specific student’s behaviour without the student knowing, however, the students do know that there is a secret student. If the secret student behaves well in a class they get a point, if the class accumulates a certain number of points they get a reward. I don’t think the reward needs to be as extravagant, It can be something as simple as watching a movie one day. I think it is important to promote good behavior.

Each strategy can benefit the classroom in a different way and I believe if used properly and consistently they can be very beneficial for both the teacher and the students.  These strategies will work best if implemented right from the beginning, that way the students understand that this is how things work in that classroom.  If the strategies are implemented all of a sudden it definitely will take more patience from both the teacher and the students and it will take time for the students to get used to the new strategy. However if the teachers sticks with it, it will be beneficial in the end.

I encourage everyone to watch this video and see if you would want to try the strategies he suggests.
